THE SAINT PIUS X SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM Our teachers work very hard, but as you know, they can’t be everywhere at once. I’m sure that there was sometime in your school career that you struggled on an assignment or had some issue with a project. More than likely, your teacher was there to help you. But if they couldn’t be, you probably didn’t have many more places to turn. That is exactly why we need our graduates to help our students – and why those graduates can truly affect the climate and community here at Saint Pius. We’re looking for tutors who can help out with all of our grades. Some students need direct instruction above and beyond what they get in the classroom, but can’t afford the rates of a Sylvan Learning Center or a private tutor. Other students need someone to help them with their homework after school or someone to give them a little advice as they work on their projects. Some students just need a young, positive, energetic role model – someone who can prove to them that hard work and study can get you to the next level, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time. Who You'll Serve There are opportunities in every grade with students of every ability level. Some students need extra help, others need extra practice, and still others need challenges that might not be possible to carry out in the course of a regular school day.
When You'll Serve After you get paired with a student or a group of students, it'll be up to you to decide when you want to meet. we encourage after school in the 3 - 5 PM time range, but you can work with the parents as necessary.
Requirements You don't need to be a great student, but you should have a working knowledge of whatever you want to tutor. We also expect you to hold to your commitment and we will check references, but how much or how little you actually tutor is up to you. If you want to do ten hours a week, that's great. If you want to do one hour a week, that's great too. As long as you've established a good relationship with a student and can offer some consistency, we'll be more than happy to work around your schedule.
Rewards The bottom line is this: as a young, educated learner, you are the best asset we have at reaching students who struggle. It will even be a help if you struggled yourself; sometimes students just need to see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. This is great chance to have a discernable, massive impact on the life of a young learner - and all it takes is about an hour a week. In addition to this, you can count this time as service hours for Bishop Kelley, the Brother Bernadine Program, or the National Honor Society.
Want more information? You can email us, call the school office at 627.5367, or RSVP for one of our informational sessions here. Those sessions will be held from 7:00 - 8:00 PM on September 26th, October 2nd, and October 4th.
